Kanashimi no Belladonna: Art, Eroticism, and Tragedy

This was a piece of art. Seriously. You don’t really find shows like this often.

It’s an adaptation of French historian Jules Michelet’s novel La Sorcière. Unlike its sister movie Cleopatra, this one is strong both in visual and motive. It’s a kind of artistic movie with more than a touch of erotica, but it’s so compelling and almost poetic in nature.

The Art Takes Center Stage

The art is the real MVP here. It’s a mixture of still and panning animation, almost like a slideshow. The illustrations and the panning scroll-like animation play a very important role in depicting the theme of the movie. Jeanne’s state of mind is quite aptly portrayed in a lot of scenes… You literally feel the chaos when the people shout and chase. From apt camera angles to the psychedelic feel of it all, it was glorious. No complaints whatsoever—it was a treat to watch.

Not Just “Hentai-Tier Garbage”

It is not exactly an erotic movie in the sense that it isn’t meant to be viewed just for that. It’s not some hentai-tier garbage. Dare I say, even the sexually implied scenes are “artistic”. :eyes:

The story is a theme of the strength of a woman. How she falls prey to society’s gutters and rises in power to influence the very same society that made her such. The story, much due to the way it was presented, feels more like poetry. It does have some realistic and historical annotations.

I liked the music too—it was good, especially the theme song.

Overall, it’s a different movie, much aside from the generic shows. Presented in a glorious way, albeit with some heavy sexual imagery, it’s sure to entrance some with the theme and animation. A must-watch for seinen and art lovers.
